the Speedmaster from Omega is one of the rare cases where everything was perfect from the beginning, perhaps even never surpassed, in keeping with the tradition of an icon ,yes, this 2915 was the first Speedmaster and the genesis of all tachymeter bezel chronographs, in fact it was the first watch to export the tachymeter scale to the bezel to confer greater ease of reading the dial. Many collectors forget that despite hundreds of space missions and the first moon landing, the Speedmaster was conceived as an automobile driver’s chronograph.

This innovation was accompanied by an attractive broad arrow hand, which gave it the nickname Speedy Broad Arrow ,but that nickname has become somewhat overblown with recent “reissue reissues “of modern Omegas. The bezel was steel only for the first few years of production a hallmark of early references 2915-1 and 2915-2. The bezel immediately proved somewhat difficult to read and delicate, so in later versions (ref. 2915-3) it would be replaced with the black bakelite one we are used to. Very few examples have come to the present day with the original bezel, and needless to say, this is one of them. The legendary Lemania base cal. 321 movement, which debuted here in 1957, remained in use until just after the lunar surface landing (1969).

The dial of 2915 also has graphic differences in its variants, the wider oval O of ‘OMEGA’ and the long tail on the R of ‘SPEEDMASTER’. The casebacks had no central engraving on the -1 and a few -2 only the Speedmaster inscription on the rim, later the hippocampus is centrally engraved . The -3 became complicated as it was transitional with changed bezels and hands, but -1 and -2 look very similar.

Models 2915-1 to -3 were produced from 1957 to 1959, in just three years, with an estimated production volume of 3,000-4,000. There are watches that tell stories. Sometimes just by looking at them, they will begin to evoke a distant story …almost whispered. Sometimes you will be lucky enough to find someone who will tell it to you because they have lived it. Very often the history or signs of time in a vintage watch are more important than the time it has been ticking for so many years …this already iconic watch , also has a great history because it was assigned Fuerza Aerea del Peru (FAP). The military use together with its condition make this masterpiece one of the most important Speedmasters ever produced.
