In the 1930s, Jaeger-LeCoultre created an extraordinarily elegant ladies’ watch, which would later become known as the “Etrier,” a French term meaning “stirrup.” The distinctive feature of this model lies in the unusual shape of the case: a rectangle positioned in an unusual way and attached to the bracelet by two stirrup-shaped lugs. This essential yet striking stylistic feature provided a versatile basis that allowed for multiple interpretations of the watch over time. The success of this design prompted the maison to also offer men’s versions, expanding its target audience. The association with the equestrian world did not go unnoticed by Hermès, which decided to include the collection in its catalog.
The model described here is a refined men’s version of the Etrier, made of steel in the 1970s with a mink blue dial. The case back is engraved with “Hermès Paris,” while the identification codes have been engraved by hand below the case number, a detail that attests to the craftsmanship and exclusivity of the piece.
The elegant shape of the case is further enhanced by a mesh bracelet, not original to Jaeger-LeCoultre, but in excellent condition. This watch is an eloquent example of the synergy between two leading names in fine watchmaking and luxury.
