The name “Turn-O-Graph” is a play on words, a composition of the English verb “to turn” and the word chronograph.
A chronograph is a watch with a stopwatch function; Rolex has called the Turn-O-Graph the “simplest chronometer ever.”
Equipped with a rotating bezel, the Turn-O-Graph embodied a revolutionary new form of chronometer functionality without additional complications and was advertised accordingly for its versatility and suitability for everyday use. Interestingly, the early Turn-O-Graph models are more similar to the early Submariner models(ref. 6202), while the later Turn-O-Graph models are clearly more related to the Datejust.
The biggest difference between the Submariner and the Turn-O-Graph is the bezel. And indeed, just like the Submariner, the bezel of the original Turn-O-Graph (ref. 6202) features not only 15-minute markers, but also 10-minute markers represented by Arabic numerals, 5-minute increments graduated with dashes, and even dots for each minute. In 1954, only a year after the launch of the Turn-O-Graph ref. 6202, the first version of the Submariner was launched and the Turn-O-Graph was incorporated into the Datejust family. With the change, the Turn-O-Graph (ref. 6309) received an upgrade by adding the Datejust’s signature date magnifier at 3 o’clock. In addition, the indicators on the bezel were reduced and 5- and 10-minute increments were added. In addition, caliber A260, originally used in the Turn-O-Graph, was replaced by caliber 743.
By integrating the Turn-O-Graph into the Datejust collection, Rolex wanted to prevent competition within its range and allowed product categories to be more easily delineated. Now the Submariner was the watch for divers and the Datejust Turn-O-Graph was a more elegant wristwatch for businessmen. The changes also transformed Rolex’s first true sports instrument watch into the first Rolex model in classic design.
This rose gold watch was produced in 1955 has a beautiful dial with the Date Just inscription in red, Dauphine hands, ‘heart’ hour markers, roulette date display, and a knurled bezel also in rose gold with ‘Clous de Paris’ first series work that makes this watch extremely rare and fascinating.
