Today I’m going to tell you about a watch that … made history.
Born in 1956, the first watch to indicate both the date and the day of the week, The Day-Date started an era that celebrated luxury and elegance and joined the 6062 and the 8171 to show the world that Rolex could make luxury watches with complications just as well as professional watches.
So with the DAY- DATE Rolex abandoned the criteria by which it had built its previous luxury watches by focusing on the reliability of an oyster case.
Rolex’s newborn was presented in two versions ref. 6510 with a smooth bezel and ref. 6511 with a knurled bezel known as a “millerighe” because of the dense decoration. Both references are driven by caliber 1055.
The case has a slightly domed appearance reminiscent of earlier bubble-backs. After just one year, these references are replaced by the new Day-Date refs. 6611 (millerighe knurled bezel), 6612 (plain bezel) and 6613 (diamond bezel).
The most important difference from the previous models is in the movement: the micro-star adjustment of the balance allows it to earn COSC certification.
The evolution of the species continues: if I asked you to close your eyes and imagine a Day-Date, you would almost certainly, for those who know the subject, go all the way back to 1959, when the iconic ref.1803 and derivatives were introduced.
The watch I present here is one of the very first produced, has come down to us in museum condition and complete with everything and more.
Bezel millerighe legacy of the old references and early Day-Date 1803 models, domed date glass that makes the dial optically different and much more beautiful than the later and flat dial, dial with leaf-shaped hour markers and hands.
The famous three-link “President” bracelet (from which the watch gets its nickname) is not present, and in its place is a very rare 18K rose gold extendible rivet Oyster bracelet.
Chronometer certificate, warranty, running bulletin, booklet, tags, original box and slipcase, in addition to the watch’s exceptional condition friezes it, as I say, in the section of THOSE BEAUTIFUL.
