What exactly is a Rolex Daytona “Porcelain”? This rare watch with its stunning and alluring dial has fascinated Rolex watch collectors since it first appeared at the launch of the then-new Rolex Daytona Cosmograph “Zenith.” It was probably produced for no more than a few months, making it an exceptionally rare piece with a relatively small number of examples. The dial of this very first edition was called “Porcelain.” It is also sometimes called “Floating Dial” or better Floating. The dial is not actually porcelain, but has a beautiful multi-layered translucent lacquered surface covering a white background. The top layer is semi-transparent, which gives the dial a three-dimensional depth and warm luminosity not found in other contemporary Rolex models.
Depending on the light, the printed inscriptions cast a delicate shadow on the surface, enhancing the charm of this dial. How did the nickname “Porcelain” come about? Objectively, this dial has something of the charm of fine porcelain, with its milky white and the way light gently diffuses through its smooth and refined surface. The Floating Porcelain Daytona dial is as rare as it is beautiful with its three-dimensional surface and very graceful black text. The name “Porcelain” is a charming and appealing metaphor for the elegant and highly refined dial finish of this exceptionally rare Daytona.

The specimen I offer for sale has never been polished and is in exceptional condition, complete with a kit that will satisfy any discerning collector.
