Watches on consignment for sale enjoy the “Seen and Liked” formula : they have not been serviced by us but are guaranteed to be original.
The first pre-series watches were produced in about 100 units : they were modified pump button cases and carried serial 2,085** .
This fantastic watch remained in the catalog for 19 years, with a total production , for the steel examples of 12000 watches ref. 6263 and slightly less for ref. 6265.
If we divide the production with the years in the catalog we see that an average of 632 watches per reference per year were produced for the entire world market.
Such low production was due to the very low demand for this watch, a real flop for the time.
I like to think it was too far ahead of its time. However the real history, the evolution, the big differences between years were exponential for the models until about 1979, then, it remained more or less the same until it was taken out of the catalog (1988). History matters a great deal in all things and this history , let us say loses significance in the early 1980s to remain more or less the same with the model nicknamed Big red.
The watch I present is a Daytona ref. 6265 with serial 2.7 mil. , thus 1971.
This model has all the distinctive features of a first series:
-low bass drum
-knuckle mk 1
-horn and tube 700
-millerighe buttons
-glass tropic dome 21
-folded bracelet with finials 271
-dial without DAYTONA lettering and low swiss t lettering.
Alongside the standard gray and black models, this Rolex could also mount “exotic dials” (although today we know them better as “Paul Newman” dials) that included a stepped minute track in a contrasting color, stylized subdial hour markers, and a more accurate continuous seconds counter. These references mounted it up to the 3 million serial .
For anyone who loves vintage Rolex watches, and Daytona watches in particular, it is hard to beat the Big Red Ref. 6265. That is what many people think. In my opinion, however, it is impossible to beat a first series, too many more interesting details, too many more evolutions, exercises in style and technique, a connoisseur’s watch.
These beauties are becoming harder and harder to find, so if you have the means, now might be the time.
