Rolex Explorer ref. 1655 Freccione Mk4
€ 20.000
The Rolex Explorer II 1655, highly regarded among fans of the brand, was introduced in 1971 and produced in several versions featuring minor graphic updates to the dial and bezel until 1985. At the time of its launch, the Explorer II had not yet assumed the status symbol it holds today, but was rather a professional tool intended for heavy use, particularly in caving.
This model represented an absolute novelty both aesthetically and technically compared to previous Explorers. The concept was partly inspired by Rolex’s better-known GMT MASTER, from which it inherited the movement with date display and the additional 24-hour hand, albeit with a different purpose: it allowed the wearer to distinguish between day and night hours, which was essential for those working for long periods in environments without natural light, such as caves.
Made exclusively from steel, the Rolex Explorer II ref. 1655 featured a solid case designed to withstand the most extreme conditions. The fixed bezel, engraved with a 24-hour scale, alternates Arabic numerals with black enamel baton hour markers. The matte black dial, with white graphics and geometric indices, ensures excellent readability. The Plexiglas crystal features a Cyclops lens over the date window at 3 o’clock, while the bracelet is the classic steel Oyster.
The most distinctive feature was the generous orange 24-hour hand, an element that led to the nickname “Freccione” (big arrow) among collectors. Thanks to this technical solution, it was possible to clearly identify daytime and nighttime hours. The bold and unusual design of the dial also gave rise to a second nickname, “Disco Dial,” due to its resemblance to the lighted dance floors of 1970s nightclubs. The model presented here is an MK4 version in excellent condition, which is a significant piece for enthusiasts. A watch not to be missed.
