A Killer Gmt
The Rolex reference 1675 remained in production for almost 20 years, until about 1979, the finest ones are undoubtedly those produced from 1959 to 1966: the world of gilt GMTs.
This world is filled with a myriad of differences that make them extremely interesting to collect. Today we discuss the underline.
Many have speculated on what the underline and/or exclamation point mean. Rolex eliminated radium as a luminous material in 1957.
The commonly accepted theory is that that underlining stands for the transition from high radium to low radium and perhaps the beginning of tritium use before “T”(tritium) designations became standardized in 1965. The dials with exclamation marks still have minimal Geiger output, although less than earlier designs, and the underlined dials usually have minimal, if any, Geiger readings. The purpose of this seemingly innocuous line was to notify customs officials that harmful radioactive was no longer being used in the dials for luminescence, but was instead being replaced by much safer tritium. This peculiarity is generally found in the MK3 closed minute dials or the radial gilt open minute dial.
The ‘UnderLine’ appeared in the UPPER half…or the LOWER half of the dials…it would seem for no logical reason. These dials were mounted only on cases with pointed crown protection or ‘cornino’, as we Italians call them, of the latest series.
This Rolex GMT-Master 1675 is a rare find , especially for its condition.. It has the unique case with pointed shoulders to protect the winding crown, seen only on Submariners and GMTs made from 1959 to 1964. The original polished black gold dial, from the early 1960s, has the rare “Underline”- detail added by Rolex to show reduced radiation levels according to the new Atomic Energy Agency standards. Dials with this marking were only made for a short period, increasing their rarity.
