The Rolex Submariner ref. 5513 is one of the longest-running and most iconic diving watches ever made. Produced from 1962 to 1990, it represents a key chapter in the evolution of the Submariner, retaining the original features that define the model: a 40 mm case, crown guards, and the clean symmetry of a dial without a date. Its timeless proportions and robust construction have made it a favorite of both professional divers and collectors. For some reason, the vintage Submariner genre appeals to me. That iconic shape, that dial, the wearability despite its age, and those fantastic bracelets: there’s a reason why this is probably the most famous watch line ever. All of this brought me back to a place I had already been: I like the Submariner 5513.
We will never know what Rolex really thought, but it gave the Submariner 5513 a very interesting tune-up during its later life.
For a period of eight years, from around 1976 to 1984, a beautiful sub-series with a matte dial went into production. Collectors refer to this period of watches as “Maxi Dial.” These watches with matte dials earned this name thanks to their larger tritium hour markers compared to previous models. It may not seem like much, but the effects are noticeable.
This particular model features the highly sought-after Maxi Dial MK2. The MKII stands out for its large, well-spaced luminous Pallettoni hour markers designed for superior readability underwater. What makes this model particularly desirable is its condition.
The tritium indices have developed a rich, warm yellow patina that adds incredible depth and charm to the matte black background. The contrast is striking, and the aging is perfectly uniform, giving the watch a unique vintage character that is impossible to replicate in modern models. The very full case and bracelet in excellent condition complete the picture of a beautiful watch.
